Etsy category & taxonomy

Every Etsy listing needs a category, and it’s one of the most important fields you set: it tells buyers where your item lives on Etsy, and it decides which colour and occasion options you can pick from. SKUvio gives you the whole of Etsy’s category tree to choose from, not a handful of preset options.

The full, live Etsy taxonomy

The category picker is powered by Etsy’s real, live seller taxonomy — roughly 3,065 categories — pulled straight from Etsy and refreshed regularly. It is not a short hardcoded list baked into the app, so whatever Etsy supports, you can pick, and when Etsy adds categories they show up here too.

You have two ways to find the right one in the Category field:

  • Search — start typing (for example, soap, earrings, or wedding) and matching categories appear as you type.
  • Browse — drill down through the tree, starting from a broad top-level category and narrowing to the exact fit.

Pick a leaf category

Etsy categories are arranged as a tree, and only the leaf nodes — the most specific end points, with nothing nested beneath them — can be assigned to a listing. When you drill in, keep going until you reach a category that has no further sub-categories. That’s the one you assign.

Choosing the most specific accurate category helps your listing show up in the right Etsy searches and browse pages.

Colour and occasion follow the category

The category you pick doesn’t just file the listing — it changes the discoverability options available further down the modal. Etsy allows a different set of colour and occasion values for each category, so as soon as you choose a category, SKUvio loads that category’s own valid colour and occasion values live from Etsy.

That means you can only ever pick options Etsy actually accepts for your item, and switching to a different category refreshes the choices. See Colour & occasion for how to set them.

Real Etsy data, always current

Because everything comes from Etsy’s own taxonomy rather than a fixed internal list, the categories, colours, and occasions you see always reflect what Etsy supports today — no waiting for an app update when Etsy changes its catalogue.
